Town of Souris
The beauty of Souris begins
with the first view of the Town; long sandy beaches, pristine coastline and
green rolling hills. This fifth largest community in PEI was incorporated in 1910 and has a
population of approx. 1,300. It is located
on the eastern shore of Prince Edward
Island and is easily accessible by land or by sea. Fishing and farming have been the traditional
economy. Souris is the French word
for "mouse." Souris' name is generally
believed to refer to the plagues of mice that devastated early inhabitants' crops. The
story is told that a French vessel passing by the bay in the early 1700s was forced to
cut through the waves of drowned mice and so gave the name to the area.
The first white inhabitants were several Acadian families
who arrived in 1740, but later abandoned the area in 1758 with the fall of
Louisbourg. They were followed by the
Scottish settlers who came to the area as early as 1772. English and Irish settlers followed around
1810. Souris
originated from 10 shorefront farm lots, cleared for cultivation and with valuable
timber inland. John Knight, Souris's founder, acquired a small wharf, built a
breakwater protection, and laid the foundation of the Town. His efforts marked the beginning of Souris as a port and lead to its shipbuilding industry.
More recently, tourism, aquaculture and the food
industry have gained importance and Souris is now
positioned as the retail and service centre for the region. It is also the terminal for the Ferry to the Magdalene Islands.
